What to expect:
Though it may sound strange for a trainer to say, I don’t want you to be stuck with me forever. My training programs are structured so that you are constantly learning, always achieving and eventually educated enough to make your own fitness decisions. For those who wish to continue to more advanced workouts, they will find that the basics will become their own responsibility while we engage in the more complex lifts/activities.
If you’re looking for a boot camp style trainer, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s not that I can’t yell at people (my voice is strong enough to be used as an emergency generator for hospitals when power goes out), but that when I yell, the point is often missed. For example if a client is complaining while squatting, instead of yelling at them to suck it up and be a man/woman, I’m going to ask them a lot of questions:
- Is there knee pain?
- Are you losing your balance?
- Are you driving your heels through the floor like we discussed earlier?
- Can you do another so I can see the placement of your feet?
If the client is lying, they’ll quickly tire of the 3rd degree and confess they’re just sick of squatting (too bad, you’ve got one more set and then you can stop!). However if they really had an issue with the exercise, by treating them like an intelligent person who can recognize discomfort in their body, I discovered that excessive external rotation of the hip was causing knee pain (they were squatting with their feet turned too far out). That’s something that would be masked by me yelling and the client keeping their issue silent.
While I cannot and will not promise that you’ll love every second of our workouts, I will promise that you’ll know why you’re doing an exercise in plain English (if you ever catch me telling you that “the dual underhook medial sagittal crosspress is a great way to target your elusive flactoid muscles”, feel free to punch me). I will not have you using cardio machines during a session unless it’s something unorthodox. There is no need for you to pay me to push the buttons on an elliptical.
Overall, I hope each of my clients goes away feeling a little bit stronger, not just physically, but emotionally.
